Isle of Anglesey County Council

Mill Lane, Beaumaris

Introduction

The Isle of Anglesey County Council experienced recurring flood risk associated with debris accumulation in the Nant Meigan watercourse, in Beaumaris.

Several flood events over the years caused property damage and road closures, highlighting the benefits of upgrading to a more resilient solution.

Our Approach

Waterco Datrys partnered with Isle of Anglesey County Council to design a system that would minimise flood risk and improve operational safety.

The approach focused on understanding the watercourse behaviour, past flood incidents and the performance constraints in the existing trash screen. Funding was secured from the Welsh Government, and Griffiths Contractors were appointed for installation.

The Solutions

A new automatic trash screen was installed upstream of the existing culvert inlet. The existing screen was refurbished to provide an additional layer of protection.

The automatic screen operates similar to a belt conveyor, lifting debris from the base and depositing it onto a platform. It activates when upstream water levels rise relative to downstream, indicating blockage. Once water levels normalise, the system stops automatically.

This design ensures that debris can be cleared safely after storm events, reducing the requirement for manual intervention during high-flow events.

Project Outcome

  • Reduced Flood Risk: The automatic screen prevents blockages during storm events, significantly lowering the risk of flooding to nearby properties.
  • Improved Safety: Maintenance teams no longer need to clear debris during storms, reducing operational hazards.
  • Enhanced Reliability: The system ensures continuous water flow and minimises disruption to residents, even during severe weather.
  • Sustainable Design: The solution aligns with Waterco Datrys’ vision for smart and sustainable water management.
