RWE Npower Renewables

Pontoon, Mostyn Dock

Introduction

In 2011, RWE Npower Renewables selected the Port of Mostyn in North Wales as the long-term operations and maintenance base for the €2 billion Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm.

This strategic decision marked a significant milestone for the region and for the team at Datrys, who were contracted to deliver critical shoreside infrastructure to support the project.

Client

RWE Npower Renewables

Project Type

Structural Engineering Pontoon Design

Date

2011

Location

Holywell, Flintshire

Our Approach

Leveraging extensive maritime sector experience, Datrys focused on expanding the port’s pontoon berthing capacity for offshore installation service vessels, from two to six.

The team navigated complex environmental constraints, as the site lies within the ecologically sensitive Dee Estuary SSSI. This required securing FEPA marine licences, a process Datrys managed entirely on behalf of the client.

The Solutions

Following an international search, Datrys identified materials that met the client’s precise specifications. However, initial contractor tender submissions exceeded budget expectations.

The team responded by refining the scope and sourcing strategy to align with financial constraints without compromising quality.

Project Outcome

The project successfully delivered a substantial increase in berthing capacity, enabling the Port of Mostyn to support one of Europe’s largest offshore wind farms.

It demonstrated Datrys’ ability to balance ecological sensitivity, technical complexity, and budgetary discipline, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted partner in maritime infrastructure.
