Holyhead Marine Services Ltd, renowned for building some of the UK’s most impressive commercial boats, experienced rapid growth after securing major contracts with the Royal Marines and Ministry of Defence.
To meet increased demand, the company needed to expand its working space by 40%. Datrys, having previously collaborated with Holyhead Marine, was appointed to design and manage the construction of the fourth and most ambitious engineering workshop at the North Wales site.

2011 - 2012
Holyhead, North Wales
We provided a comprehensive, all-in-one project management service. The team worked closely with Holyhead Marine to define requirements, plan, and design the new facility.
Our team managed all paperwork, including preparing separate tender packs for civil and structural works, and maintained a rigorous risk register. Site supervision was handled directly, ensuring any issues were resolved promptly and without client disruption.
The solution was a 26m x 40m workshop featuring an innovative retractable mezzanine, a crane gantry, new offices, upgraded drainage, and an extended quay.
The structure included a 700m² portal frame with 11m eaves and an overhead gantry crane. The slab was engineered to support a 100-ton capacity boat hoist, and the foundations were strengthened with ground anchors to accommodate the extension.
The project delivered a modern, state-of-the-art facility, increasing operational capacity and efficiency. Holyhead Marine now operates one of the most advanced yards of its size in the UK, supporting new-build, refit, and repair of vessels up to 24m or 100 tons. The strong professional relationship and responsive service provided by Datrys were highly valued by the client.
