Flood Modeller 2019
4th Oct 2019
Waterco Technical Specialist, Dave Hughes, attended the Jacobs Flood Modeller Conference at the Geological Society, London on Thursday 3rd October 2019.
With over 100 delegates the conference provided a great opportunity to network with industry professionals and learn about the latest development and capabilities of Flood Modeller software.
This year Dave supported a Jacobs presentation by carrying out Flood Modeller and TUFLOW Simulations in the Cloud and benchmarking performance against traditional on premise projects.
Waterco and Jacobs presented an interpretation of the results of this benchmarking to offer comparisons of local and cloud simulation execution, both in terms of run times and cost.
Using the results, they covered when it makes sense to use Flood Cloud and the costs involved (including a comparison to licence rental).
Our findings show that Flood Cloud is best used when running large batches of simulations concurrently, or when available licences are at a premium and is ideally suited for large scale capital projects at significant scale. Its scalability and licence‑free setup can provide a cost effective alternative to monthly rental or permanent purchase of local or network licences.
For day to day modelling projects that support mid-size housing development / planning projects, carried out by dedicated flood modelling teams, investment in Jacobs software and on premise CPU may still prove the most cost effective solution.
Other highlights of the day included the talk on hidden and upcoming features by the Jacobs team and flood forecasting with Flood Modeller by Bryony Smith from Capita which were both really informative and key takeaway points from the day. Good job to all the organisers. See you next year.
